Here is what happened: we upgraded our internal database schema, as we frequently do, but it triggered an unexpected CASCADE which deleted other tables/views.

As a result, the IMAP/SMTP/FTP/WebDAV daemons were unable to perform authentication until we restored a backup.

No data has been lost during the operation.
