We’ve noticed that avast blacklisted one of our shared servers IP address (http9). If you use avast and go visit a website hosted on this server, you’re likely to get errors such as “connection reset”.

avast never tried to contact us before. We’ve tried to telephone them earlier today, to no avail. We’ve sent them an email asking for more details, and their response was:

this seems to be suspicious: "http://www.scumware.org/report/178.32.28.119"

Considering that:

  • all websites listed on this page have been suspended or removed at least several weeks ago
  • we’re always quick to delete fraudulent accounts
  • any shared hosting provider is bound to have such malware - some of them have many, many more than us and are not blacklisted

we don’t think they did a good job. They could have contacted us, banned subdomains or, at worst, the alwaysdata.net domain. Other security companies did not ban this server:

We’re encouraging our customers to let them know that they’re not happy about the situation.

The IP has been unblocked, reportedly on Saturday.
